Online casinos in Alberta: how the licensed market works

Guides › Alberta · Last checked 4 October 2026

Since 13 July 2026, private online casinos can operate legally in Alberta if they’re registered with the province. Here’s what changed, who’s in charge, and how to tell a licensed site from an unlicensed one.

The short version

  • You must be 18 or older and physically in Alberta.
  • Only play at sites registered with Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC).
  • Licensed sites must offer deposit limits, time limits and the province’s self-exclusion program.

What changed in July 2026

Before July 2026, the only legal online casino in Alberta was the province’s own site. The new market lets private operators apply. Twenty-eight operators had been confirmed by May, and 22 went live on launch day, including BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel and theScore Bet.

Who is in charge

BodyRole
Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC)The regulator. Registers operators and sets the rules they must follow.
Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC)Runs the commercial side. Each operator signs an agreement with it after registering.

Protections you get at a licensed site

  • Deposit limits and time limits you set yourself
  • Activity statements showing what you’ve spent
  • Access to AGLC’s central self-exclusion program, which covers every licensed site at once
  • Problem-gambling resources and a complaints route backed by the regulator

Unlicensed offshore sites that still advertise to Albertans offer none of this.

How to check a site is licensed

Look for the operator on AGLC’s iGaming pages. Licensed brands usually run an Alberta-specific version of their site. Our step-by-step guide covers both provinces: how to check a casino’s licence.
